SUMMARY:Designing your AI Solution Ethically
DESCRIPTION:As more technology startups and social entrepreneur founders use GenAI to create impactful solutions\, given the rising appreciation of the externalities and new regulations globally\, it has become increasingly important for AI ethics and governance be an integral part of the design process. This 1 ½ hour workshop introduces Hack4SDG participants to salient AI ethical design considerations when creating and implementing their SDG solutions to address our aging population\, sustainable food and waste systems and inclusive cities for this hackathon\, and beyond. \nDate: October 4\, 2024 (Fri)\nTime: 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm\nVenue: Room 319\, 322 & 323\, 3/F\, Cheng Yu Tung Tower\, Main Campus\, HKU; Online (Zoom)\nRegistration: https://forms.gle/W9xApUrRiXB2opBV8 \nFor attending in person at HKU Centennial Campus: \n   \nSpeaker: Brian W Tang\, Executive director of Law\, Innovation\, Technology and Entrepreneurship Lab \n \nBiography: \nBRIAN W TANG is founding executive director of Law\, Innovation\, Technology and Entrepreneurship Lab\, the award-winning interdisciplinary and experiential programme at University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Law (LITE Lab@HKU).  Brian’s LITE Lab and its students have won international accolades such as 2023 Edtech Heroes Award for Stakeholder Engagement (Adult Education)\, Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC) Legal Innovation in Operations Award 2022 and Georgetown Law’s Iron Tech Lawyer Invitational. His current wide-ranging research areas cover AI governance\, emerging capital markets for tokenized securities and carbon markets\, sustainable financing and the role and impact of technology on the future delivery of legal services and education. \nBrian is a member of the Microsoft-SMU Asian Dialogue on AI Governance and was a member of the IEEE Standards Association’s Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems Policy Committee. Brian has authored or co-authored chapters in Artificial Intelligence in Finance (Edward Elgar\, 2023)\, The AI Book (Wiley\, 2020)\, The Regtech Book (Wiley\, 2017)\, The Fintech Book (Wiley\, 2016) and Reconceptualizing Global Finance and its Regulation (Cambridge University Press\, 2016). \nBrian is part of the small vanguard of educators incorporating generative AI into his teaching and has applied his pedagogy to upskilling in-house lawyers\, and also leads a climate contracting initiative involving leading law firms and legal departments in collaboration with The Chancery Lane Project. \nBrian previously spent nearly 20 years at global investment bank Credit Suisse in Hong Kong\, and at law firms Sullivan & Cromwell in New York and California and Mallesons in Perth\, Australia. \nBrian is co-chair of the Asia Pacific Legal Innovation and Technology Association (ALITA)\, APAC Regional board member of Global Alliance of Impact Lawyers (GAIL)\, and board member of the Fintech Association of Hong Kong.

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into our daily workflows\, understanding the potential for cognitive offloading—where reliance on AI may impact our cognitive processes—is essential. This workshop will explore the role of metacognition\, or thinking about thinking\, as a strategy for more effective collaboration with AI systems. Participants will engage in discussions and activities designed to raise awareness of how AI can both support and hinder problem-solving. The session will cover strategies to maintain a balanced approach\, ensuring that AI tools enhance rather than diminish human cognitive capacities. By the end of the workshop\, attendees will have a deeper understanding of how to leverage AI as a collaborative partner in problem-solving while safeguarding and enhancing their own metacognitive skills. \n  \nSpeaker: Dr. Sean McMinn \nDirector\, Center for Education Innovation \n  \nDr Sean McMinn is the Director of Center for Educational Innovation at HKUST. Having nearly 20 years’ experience in higher education\, Sean has taught a range of subjects\, such as Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning\, Business Communications\, EAP\, Digital Literacies\, and Social Complex Systems\, and has interests in learning design\, educational technology\, digital literacies\, and networked learning. He won a Teaching Innovation Award in 2007 for his work with podcasts and education at HKUST and a SHSS Teaching Award in 2015.
